Working During Cancer Treatment

By Arsya Jan7,2022

Some people manage to continue working even when undergoing cancer treatment, while for some, it can be impossible. The side effects of treatment usually make it hard for one to focus on other things. In addition, the treatment you are getting, your general health, the cancer stage, and the type of work you do can also determine whether you will continue working or if you will have to rest. Either way, if you are working while undergoing treatment, here are some tips that can help.

Schedule Treatment Appointments Carefully

It is important to be conscious of how you schedule your treatment appointments. You cannot predict how you will feel once you are done with treatment. So, for instance, maybe you have been diagnosed with breast cancer Orange county-based, and you want to ensure that you can still focus on your work. Try scheduling your appointment in the evening since you will be going home to rest or over the weekend when you are not working.

Set Boundaries

If you choose to continue with work while undergoing treatment, understand what you can handle, then set boundaries. Some cancer treatments, such as mesothelioma, can be quite aggressive, involving chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. The last thing you want is to overexert yourself at work and end up feeling worse. Allow yourself to only deal with tasks you can comfortably handle. If possible, you can also work from home on some days. This will make you feel less tired and give you more time to take care of yourself.

Get Support

Whenever you need help, ask for it. Do not be afraid to lean on your coworkers for work-related tasks. If they already know that you are under treatment, they will be more than willing to lend a hand. Family members and close friends can help as well with managing household tasks, so that you get enough rest.

On the other hand, if you find that you cannot work while undergoing treatment, communicate this to your employers and take some time off. Your main priority should be getting treatment.
